LONDON LAUNCHES UNITED SUPPORTERS CLUB

As long as I can remember, there has been a Manchester United following in London, Ontario. Just spread out around the town, with no home and no initiative to create a club. Most of the fans did not know each other. Over the last three years, more and more Manchester United fans started to converge in downtown London, most coming to a great bar called "The Scot's Corner". The fans started talking to each other but no word of a club was mentioned. Then, the Champion’s League final between Chelsea and Manchester United drew one of the biggest turnouts for a soccer game save for World Cup. People were talking but the following year saw fluctuating and disappointing turnouts.

Then, a United fan who moved here from Sudbury, Ontario named Derek Collins-Newman came to a couple games over the 2008-2009 season. He saw the potential and, after a huge turnout for the Champion’s League Final against Barcelona, he decided to approach me about a club. Derek is a longtime United fan who knew about the Manchester United Supporters Club of Canada. Whenever he was in Toronto, he would go their headquarters at The Main Event (Yonge & Eglinton). He described the atmosphere as “electric” and asked me if we could create a London branch.

The seed was planted with one problem: it was planted during the off-season. Like United themselves, the lads carried on to find a way to create the club, find a headquarters and get the word out. Within a month, we had 10 people keen on the prospect of it. Thirty days into the season, with the help of the internet, we had over 20 supporters at the pub and over 30 online. We also secured our headquarters at THE SCOT’S CORNER (268 Dundas Street; corner of Wellington) and the owner, Billy Thompson (a Ranger’s Fan) has been very supportive and welcoming to all the footy fans. We see The Scot’s Corner becoming the soccer bar of London, if it is not already.

In late September of 2009, MUSC of Canada was contacted and they explained how to go about launching an official branch of Manchester United Canadian Supporters Club. One by one, we started signing up, and here we are and we are getting bigger and bigger. The club is now an official branch of the MANCHESTER UNITED SUPPORTERS CLUB OF CANADA with its own headquarters and website.

We have to send out thanks. First off, we have to thank BILLY at THE SCOT'S CORNER for housing the club. We appreciate it. Second, we have to thank DEREK who came up with this idea and came to me to get things going. Derek also designed the logo, business cards, posters and this website. Finally, we have to thank every single person who comes out to the games, making the club a lot of fun. Thank you.
